EARLY YEARS AND SURGICAL TRAINING

Cathy commenced her medical training at the University of Sydney in 1993. She completed her medical training in 1998 and began working as an Intern and Resident Medical Officer at Northern Sydney Area Health Service in Sydney. In 2004, she commenced her General Surgery training where she trained in a number of hospitals both regional and metropolitan in NSW. It was during this time that Dr Thoo developed an interest in Vascular Surgery and decided to pursue this surgical speciality.

Cathy trained in specialist Vascular Units at the Royal Brisbane, Royal North Shore and Prince of Wales Hospitals within Australia. She completed her Vascular Fellowship and became a fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS) and full member of the Australia and New Zealand Society of Vascular Surgery in 2009.

Cathy worked as a Vascular and Endovascular Surgeon at Royal North Shore Hospital and North Shore Private Hospitals which are all located on Sydney’s Lower North Shore from 2009 to 2018.

CURRENT ENDEAVOURS

She has interests in endovenous management of varicose veins, acute management of iliofemoral deep venous thrombosis, open carotid surgery and stenting, open and endovascular management of thoracic and abdominal aortic pathology, dialysis access work, renal transplantation, lower limb bypass and peripheral angiography with angioplasty and stenting.

She has been part of a multidisciplinary teams working with Cardiothoracic, Upper Gastrointestinal and Neurosurgeons. Through this collaboration, she has been able to achieve options that weren’t always available and excellent outcomes for her patients.

Cathy has her total practice work entered in the Australasian Vascular Audit (AVA) which ensures peer review of all her operations. She is currently a member of the Continued Professional Development (CPD) & Audit committee for the Australian and New Zealand Society of Vascular Surgery (ANZSVS). She is also a first line assessor for the Collaborative Hospitals Audit of Surgical Mortality (CHASM) with the RACS.

Cathy has been passionately involved in the teaching of medical students and junior doctors throughout her career. She is currently a supervisor for the Vascular SET trainee. She is a mentor for the Women in Medicine and Surgery at Royal North Shore Hospital. Cathy is an honorary senior clinical lecturer and examiner for the University of Sydney. She has also been a Co-Chairperson, presenter and panellist at a number of Australian Conferences and workshops.
